    Tsunami now speaks UTF-8
    Note 242 of 248 · by Wildcat · 04-Nov-2026 6:07pm
The MUD now uses UTF-8 everywhere, including telnet, the web client, Discord, the boards, mail and the database. Accented letters (å ä ö é), curly quotes, symbols and emoji now show correctly for everyone, whichever client they use, and they come through Discord intact in both directions. Your saved aliases, titles, mail and tell history were converted. If you had the same alias typed two different ways (for example "ö" from two clients), the newer one was kept. Most clients need nothing done. Mudlet switches to UTF-8 by itself: we now offer the telnet CHARSET option. MUSHclient users should tick "UTF-8 (Unicode)" in the world's Output settings. If accented letters or symbols look like two odd characters (é instead of é), or what you type loses its accents, your client is still using Latin-1. This mostly happens with zMUD, older CMUD, BlowTorch or Windows telnet. To go back to Latin-1, type: setenv charset latin-1 With latin-1, characters your client can't show become the nearest plain one (a curly quote becomes ') or a "?". Use 'setenv charset ascii' for plain ASCII only, or 'setenv charset auto' (the default) to let your client and the MUD agree on it again. The setting is account-wide. Report anything that looks wrong with 'bug' or 'typo'.
